Hello. I hope you can help me with any info you have. My great-great grandfather, Andrew Brown, is listed in the 1871 archives as follows:
District No. 49 - North Ontario, Township of Uxbridge

Andrew Brown, aged 46 years, born in Ireland, Reformed Presbyterian, hotel keeper. His wife was Martha Brown, aged 31 years, born in Ireland, Reformed Presbyterian. Their children were Robert (11 years), James (9 years), Elizabeth (6 years), Alexander (5 years), and John (2 years).

John is my great grandfather. He was (purportedly) born on September 10, 1869 in Altona, Ontario, but I have been unable to locate his birth certificate.

Any information you can provide will be GREATLY apprecriated.

Thanks.

Dear Mr. McGillivray,
What a wonderful thing you have done for people.I just found your page on the internet and hope I can be as lucky as the people I read about.I think my family arrived around 1830.

  3. Michael MALONE married Ann SULLIVAN had 4 children in the 1860's.
  4. Patrick MALONE married Sarah Cavanah had 3 children in the 1860's
  5. Dennis MALONE born 1840 in Brock married Elisa M.MCNENEY had 7 children in the 1860's and 70's. This is my 2nd great grandparents.

I have been working on a family history and have just finished a 'census search' for Scott/Reach and Whitby West Twps.

I am interested in the 'Foster Clan.' As far as I can ascertain they arrived in Scott Twp. in late 1851 or early 1852. The group consisted of: Widowed mother -- Mary Hodgson Foster (1795); widowed daughter Harriet Foster Crawshaw (1818); Robert (1820) and Rose Foster and children John and Lois; John Towst(1825) and Frances Foster and daughter Eliza (1851) and younger son Edward (1830).

This is a good start but I am looking for my Great-Grandmother, Susanna Jane Foster who seems to have been born to John Towst Foster. I want to know for sure if her mother was Frances and when Frances died. Also when, Mary Foster, whom I assume was the mother of John Foster (1856) and John Towst died. Did Eliza Foster marry a Vandenburgh and if so how many children did she have and when did she die? I have reams of information on Thomas Foster (1852 - 1945). Did Agnes marry or pass away? (all from John Tost Foster's family.)

I was only able to find Robert Foster in the census' of 1861 and 1881. When did his wife Rose die? I only found Edward once in 1861 and he then disappeared.

My Great-Grandfather Thomas William Foster was supposed to be Susanna's first cousin. He too was born in Patrington Haven, Yorkshire, England, but I do not know wether his family emigrated to Canada or wether he traveled here on his own. After his marriage he set up housekeeping in Reach Twp. and later moved to West Whitby Twp. I really know nothing about them until they moved to Manitoba, but I do not know when.

As you can tell there are a lot of empty spaces in my family tree. Any information that will be forthcoming will be greatly appreciated. Please let me know when and where I am to send the $25.00 requested for this marvelous service. It is well worth the price if I am able to get a few of the missing pieces for the puzzle.

    Thanking you in advance,
    Yours truly,
    Betty L. Wilson

    UPDATES

Museum curator, Allan McGillivray, has provided Ms. Wilson with the following information:
    • McGillivray refered Betty Wilson to Edith Shaw of New Westminister, B.C., Terry Foster of the North-west Territories and Isabel St. John of Uxbridge, who are all working on the Foster family tree.
    • Louise Julia Foster married John Vanderburgh. She died Feb. 9, l88l, at 35y3m. She had 3 sons and 3 daughters.
    • Don't know when Mary Foster and Rose, wife of Robert Foster died.

    Dear Mr. McGillivray:

Thank you for your prompt reply to my queries about the Foster Family. Your cheque will be in the mail in the next couple of days.

Also thank you for passing on my questions to Mrs. St. John, who wrote an e-mail last Sunday.

For your information Susanna Jane Foster was the third child of John Towst and Frances Foster -- born, july 24, 1853 in Lampton Mills, York Twp. Upper Canada. I had located her in the 1861 census of Scott Twp. but was unsure as to her mother was. I have been given to understand that John Towst and Frances remained in Lampton Mills until around 1857 when Frances died. If this is so John Towst Jr. is also Frances' son and not Mary's.

You mentioned that you had received a short note from Terry Foster complimenting you on the Museum pages. After i e-mailed you I called Terry -- whose phone number I had had for somr time -- and in the courtse of the conversation I mentioned your site, so I guess he just went to check it out.

If I come acxross any further information in my research that I think you might be interested in I will let you know. Thank you again for your kind attention to my questions.

    Yours truly,
    Betty L. Wilson

Am trying to track down a TEMPLE - HILTS marriage in the Markham area. It would have taken place before 1830. There is a Henry Temple living in Uxbridge in the Crowder's index for 1850. Can anyone tell me his wife's name?

Does anyone know where I can see the Home District Marriages for the York County area. These are early marriages that are not in the vital records. I've just returned from Salt Lake and they do not have them at the LDS library.

    Thank you

I just visited your site looking for information on some of my ancestors. My great-great-grandfather Thomas Coppin and his wife Ann raised a family in Ontario. My grandfather Edwin Coppin came from Mitchell, Ont.

The interesting thing I found was a link from Uxbridge to North Dakota where I live. My ancestors came from your area to North Dakota. I currently live in Jamestown, North Dakota which is 30 miles from Leal.I am searching local libraries for info. on Uxbridge township. If you would like I will get a picture of Leal for you and relay any information I find on the history of Leal and its connection to Uxbridge.

I enjoyed looking through your site and visiting the museum last summer. In the 1881 census, I found my great-great grandparents and their children living in Uxbridge Twp. I would like to find out the lot and concession numbers and the actual location for the present.

The film number is C-13244 Division Number 1, page 29,
    Number 135
Frampton Robert, wife Jane (McMullen) children William and Betsy,
    Number 136
McMullen William, wife Eliza children William, Melinda, Martha, Sinclair and Henry
    Number 137
McMullen Joseph, wife Margaret, sons Robert and Jacob[my grandfather]

The McMullen's lived at Con 9, Lot 34 Markham Twp, York County from 1831 to 1880.Then moved to Uxbridge Twp. In the 1891 Census they had moved back to Stouffville.

I am looking for information on two families which have connections to the Uxbridge - Scott area. The surnames are HEBNER and MARTIN. My 3rd-great-grandparents were David William HEBNER (born 1836 in Ontario) and Martha Matilda MARTIN (born 1847 Scott Twp. ONT). David and Martha were married in 1862 in "York County". Do you have any record of these families in your archives? David also have a first wife Cynthia A. BENNETT - they were married in Markham in 1858 and she died in childbirth in 1861. I would be interested in anything you may be able to offer regarding the HEBNER, MARTIN or SCHELL families. If you need additional information, let me know and I would be glad to provide what I have in our files.
Thank you so much....Diana M. Hebner, Marysville, MI USA
