From: Karen Kautzmann of Mandan, North Dakota, U.S.A.

Dear Sir:
I am in search of any available records on Arthur Carroll, born in the late 1800's and who I believe was my grandfather. He worked in Mayville, North Dakota around 1911 or 1912 as a typesetter for the local newspaper. The only article I have found from that paper says he left suddenly for "Ontario" around 1912 or 1913. He fathered a child out of wedlock, and the child was my mother, now deceased. She was born January 20, 1913. Ida Lura Porter was her mother. My mother's birth certificate says "father unknown". My mother never was able to locate her father. Relatives told her that he may have been Canadian. I realize this is probably impossible, but I would like to find out what happened to Arthur Carroll after he left North Dakota.

..... Thank you.

Dear Mr. McGillivray,

Thank you so much for all of the information on the family of Robert Acton! I can follow this line down through Edward and Elizabeth (McKay) and their son Russell and Leta (Parrott) Acton who all lived in Uxbridge. The information you sent was shared with my family at a recent get together. There my mother recognized YOUR name as someone she went to school with at Uxbrige High School. She was Joyce Voutt, now the wife of Don Acton. If you have any other information on Edward and Elizabeth Acton I would enjoy having it. I know they had three children, Cora, Robert and Russell but I don't have birthdates, date of deaths or marriages. Most of my family is in the Peterborough area, Norwood and Havelock. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Joanne McMaster

I was looking through your In Search of section and came across a request for information on Robert Acton and Mary Jane Fair. I am related to the Acton line through Diana Acton who married John Golden. I have lots of names after Diana but none before (including her parents). And I have very few dates. Any information you could send me on this line would be much appreciated.

I am especially interested in Bridget Golden (Diana's daughter) who married Joseph Sanders. I have no information on the Sanders line before Joseph but I know they homesteaded in the area.

I know the Merrick family was doing a family book about 20 years ago that included the Golden, Acton and Sanders families. Would you have any information on whether a family book was published?

If you require a donation to fund this work please let me know, I'll send it out right away.

Thanks for your help.

From: Jean Florhaug of Jamestown, North Dakota, U.S.A.

I found the following on one of your web pages -
" Uxbridge Township, North Dakota, United States "

"Uxbridge Township in North Dakota was named by settlers from Uxbridge, Ontario. The first post-office there was called Uxbridge, and later changed to Leal. The first postmaster there was Joseph J. Bascom, a relative of Joseph Bascom who was the first postmaster at Uxbridge, Ontario."

I am excited that you might be able to give me information on George Oglesby Sr. who would be my great-great grandfather. I believe he was born in Canada and was married in Uxbridge, Canada, but that is about all I have.

The following is an excerpt from a book published in 1940 called "My Native Land - A Story of Uxbridge Township, Barnes County, North Dakota". Here is the excerpt - "George Oglesby, Sr., filed a homestead in Uxbridge township in 1883. In that year, he and his brother, Samuel, and his son, Francis, came to Dakota Territyory along with a large group from Uxbridge, Canada, a small village lying about forty miles north of Toronto. It was in that year that the first child was born in the township."

Other people mentioned in this book are William & Joseph Bascom, John Hilborn, Samuel Lowe, Thomas McMillan, Frand Widdifield, & Andrew Willson - all from Ontario, Canada.

Anyway, any information you can give me on George Oglesby, Sr. would be truly appreciated. I have been trying to find records on this branch of my family for years. I might also add, that my mother, went to Uxbridge School, in Uxbridge Township, North Dakota. I presently live in Jamestown, North Dakota.

Thanks again. I'll be anxiously waiting to hear from you.

George Ogglesby was actually in Scott Township, the next township north of Uxbridge Township. He was in the Zephyr area, about l0 miles north-west of Uxbridge Town. George came into the township after l86l, and was there by l864. He was then a tenant on the east half of Lot 35, Concession l, which was l00 acres, in the north-west part of the township. He later moved to Lot 22, Conc. 4, Scott Twp., just south-east of Zephyr. He may have rented elswhere in the township as well. Zephyr Zion Cemetery: "Isabel, daughter of George and Isabel Ogglesby, died March l, l870, at 8 months".

l87l Census, Scott Twp.:
George Ogglesby 49 years born Eng. Anglican farmer
Isabella 46 "
Emily l4 born on the sea.
Francis (Frank) ll born Ontario
George 7 "
Samuel 4 "
Samuel 5l born England farmer

l88l Census, Scott Twp.:
George Ogglesby 59 born Eng. farmer
Isabella 56 "
George l7
Samuel l5
Samuel 6l born England farm labourer
Where was Emily by this time? Frank was also not listed at home.

George Ogglesby had a farm sale in March of l883. Uxbridge Journal,Saturday, March 24: At Lot 22, Conc. 4, Scott Twp., the farm stock, implements, etc., belonging to George Ogglesby. Sale at l p.m. J.C. Widdifield, auctioneer.

Uxbridge Journal, March 28, l889: Report from North Dakota mentioned Frank Ogglesby as being appointed overseer of Road l, in his home area.

I have a copy of some pages from "My Native Land". Among those who went from the Uxbridge, Ontario area to Barnes County, N.D., were Charles Marsh, J.A. Plank, D. and J. Walks, Joseph J. Bascom, Levi Phillips (from Scott Twp.), Donald and Allan Ross (from Scott Twp.), Adam Blair (from Scott Twp.), Frank Widdifield, the Hilborn family and of course George Ogglesby.

About l99l, Leal had a centennial. I sent two articles from the Uxbridge, Ontario, newspaper for folks there to use in a book they were preparing for the centennial. Have you seen that book?

Sincerely,
Allan McGillivray, Curator, Uxbridge-Scott Museum.

Howdy Y'all:
WOW!

This morning I was surfing the Web when I found your Uxbridge Web site. I was thrilled to find information about the Quakers that settled the Uxbridge area because many of those people were my ancestors. For example, my great.....great granduncle, Job Webb, bought a 200 acre farm in Uxbridge in the Spring of 1805. He paid $40 for the land. Job married Sarah Eves of Queen Street, East Gwillimbury, early in 1809. He died in 1834.

I have a history of the Webb family written by Clayton Webb, who was born in 1799 in PA and was Job Webb's brother, about early family experiences in the Catawissa PA and Uxbridge ON areas.

How can I get hold of Allan McGillivray? Does he have a book for sale?

Hello. My ancestor's elusive brother may have been in Durham for a time. Born in Ipswich, Suffolk, England in 1793, Charles MEADOWS may have served with the Durham militia. I know there was a Charles Meadows who served, who was 40 in 1833, and so wish to learn more about this Charles Meadows to see if he's ours.

What I know: Charles emigrated from England to Canada in the 1810s or 20s. He had two brothers, John George and Joseph, who settled near Woodstock, Oxford Co., Ontario. I know he was a sailor, that he was shipwrecked at least twice in the Bay of Biscay, and that he lived to be quite old, dying ca. 1888. I seek information about him and any family (spouse, kids) he might have had, in hopes of finding ties to his parents in England. If information should happen to turn up about John George and Joseph, that would be welcome too.

Thanks so much!

I would be interested in information you might have on:
Christopher Carmichael, born May 26, 1851, Scotland. Married Margaret Ann Hall (daughter of Jason C. Hall) probably at Uxbridge around 1871-2. They left Uxbridge around 1879-1881, arriving in MI in the summer of 1883. Christopher's father might have been a John Carmichael.

Any help would be appreciated. I would be very happy to pay any reasonable fee.

Hi - have been to your website many times and have thoroughly enjoyed it. My great grandfather was J.C. Raham who owned cojointly with a person named Oke a carriage factory (house) on Brock Street, Uxbridge in the 1880's. Apparently he was also Reeve of ?Uxbridge Twp. in 1912. He was married twice, first wife name unknown, however she was the mother of my grandfather Nelson Harvey Raham. The second marriage was to woman (first name unknown) with surname of Wilson. She had two children from a previous marriage I believe, names of Clarence Wilson and Elizabeth Wilson. Unfortunately this is all the info my father, William Harvey Raham can remember at this time. I am hoping the blanks can be filled in as to dates (birth, death) and names; any other information pertaining to the Raham name would be greatly appreciated. I remember as a small child visiting Aunt Lizzy in Uxbridge but only seem to remember a large house with outhouse in the back. Would you please search for the missing information for me or let me know how I can obtain same.

Appreciate your help.

Dear Mr. Lundin - we have Raham information going back to Charles Ramm in England. We also have a family tree showing the 15 children of Charles Raham, including Joseph Raham. Several people have been researching the Raham family in recent years.

Hugh V. Raham of Wilson, N.Y. is descended from Joseph Raham.

Please send your post office address, and I shall send copies of the Raham pages. We don't charge for research, but appreciate donations to the Uxbridge-Scott Museum.

Hello Mr. McGillivray!

You can't imagine how delighted I was to discover your web site. I don't know if you remember, but I also made a similarly precious discovery a few years ago. I spent a week in the Zephyr, Newmarket, Uxbridge area - researching my great-grandparents who immigrated from Ireland and Scotland in the mid-1800's: John Rafferty, Jane Morrison, Andrew Caroline-Smith, William McClellan.

Being "led" to your doorstep back in May of 1994, and from the research you had done, I learned more about my ancestors than I had been able to learn in the last 15 years. I use your wonderful book "Decades of Harvest: A History of the Township of Scott 1807-1973" as a constant resource. It is a goldmine of information!

I am at a standstill with my research, and one of the bits of information you had given me about my great great grandmother, Mary Jane Moore, b. circa 1799, m. John Morrison, d. 19 Sep 1873, was that she was the sister of Sir John Moore, of British military fame. What was the source of that info? I have tried to discover more about the Moore's, but have gotten no where.

Also, are there any publications available on the history of the Sutton/Georgina area?

Thanks for being there, Mr. McGillivray....I think fondly of the wonderful week I spent in those beautiful hills and dales..... (I am recently married to my Greek high school sweetheart...my name *was* Colleen M. Dobson!!)

Hi Mr. McGillivray,

Thanks so much for sending me the photocopy of the article on Ellen Morrison from the 1944 Mt. Albert Journal. I have since had a gentleman in Edinburgh helping me with research on the family of Sir John Moore, and if my great great grandmother *was* the youngest sister of Sir John, then she was probably a *distant* *sister* that I have not been able to locate - yet.

According to the information I received, plus information I found at the LDS International Genealogical Index, Sir John had only one sister, Jean, who was older than he. He did have five brothers and all siblings were born in Scotland. Possibly Mary Jane Moore Morrison was a daughter of James Carrick Moore, John's younger brother, who subsequently married, lived in Ireland, and had five children in Ireland....but Mary Jane was not listed among them.

If you have any ideas on how I might proceed in tracking Mary Jane's parents, please let me know. I have the date of her death....19 Sep 1873 in Scott Twp, and have written to the Ontario Archives, but received a reply that they don't send copies of registered deathes.

Where did you find the info that she was born in Co. Down Ireland? And what was the source of the date of her death? Might there be further info in local newspaper archives?

Do you know if there are any living MORRISON descendants that I might contact?

Thank you again for your assistance, and for your reply to my previous inquiry.

Regards,
Colleen (Dobson) Panagiotou

I am willing to pay someone to do some research in the area newspaper archives.

From family history I have learned that one of my ancestors, Charles Chapman was one of the Quaker families that settled the Uxbridge area. The Chapman family were Quakers in England, settled at Wrightstown Pennsylvania in the 1680's and some of the family moved to Ontario about 1805. My Great Grandfather later moved to Manitoba in the 1880's.

1) Has anything been written about the early settlers of the Uxbridge area?

2) Are there still any Chapmans in the area?

I am doing research into the Lyons family, and it seems that I have gone as far as I can without actually coming to Uxbridge ! I have a letter, from a great-aunt I think, discussing the roots of the family in Ontario.

It says that Joseph Lyons settled on Lot 17, Concession 7 in Scott Township in 1840. Where did he come from ? His son William Thomas Lyons got some land down there in 1878 by Joseph Thomas will (I guess Joseph died), he got north 1/2 of Lot 17. His brother Joseph Jr. got south 1/2.

The letter is unclear as to whether or not there were brothers involved. I guess a homestead was built in 1871 for William Thomas' bride Jemimah Mustard. Anyway, William Thomas Lyons 1833-1913 had a son Alexander who was my great-grandfather. My grandfather Wagar Lyons 1908-1975 was born in Oakville Manitoba.

Help ! Can you connect me to any Lyons down there ? Thanks.

The name was not listed in either the 1871 census index for Ontario Co., or for York Co.

So glad to find your site. My gradfather's family is from Uxbridge, and I have little information on them.

Can you direct me to someone or a local agency that might be able to help me with birth/death/cemetery records?

The family name is Naylor, my grandfather and siblings born in 1880-1890. Known children were Cuthbert (emegrated to Los Angeles), Archie Elgin (my grandfather, born June abt 1886, moved to BC, emegrated to California in 1928, Clarence (last known residence of Uxbridge), Soph, Greta.

Clarence was living in Uxbridge when I visited as a child in 1957, was active in a small Baptist Church, had daughter Jean.

I expect Clarence died and is buried in Uxbridge. He married twice; one wife was Ida.

We do not know the names of my grandfather's paren ts--father either died in a bridge building accident or left the family when the children were young.

I'm interesting in getting as much family information as I can. I would appreciate any help or direction you can give me.
