Excitement is building for children of all ages for
the 6th Annual
Uxbridge Huck Finn Youth Fishing Day, Saturday, April
26th at Elgin Pond in Uxbridge, presented by the
Uxbridge Canadian Tire and the Town of Uxbridge.
Everything starts at 9:30am
with the Huck Finn Parade at Elgin Park. Children
are encouraged to
dress up in their best Huck Finn costume and
bring a decorated bike or wagon. Awards will be given in various categories
such as for the best costume, best
decorated, etc. Parade participants will also enjoy
a preferred fishing area during the event.
Then, from 10am to 1pm, it’s
fishing fun!! Children 15 years and under will
fish from the shores of Elgin Pond in hopes of catching
the big one and winning a prize.
While participants are encouraged
to bring their own gear, fishing equipment will
be provided if needed,
courtesy of the Pickering Rod and Gun Club. Also,
bait and fish cleaning services will be available at no charge,
and the young anglers will enjoy a free
hotdog and water.
Participants can register for
the event by picking up a ribbon at the Uxbridge
Canadian
Tire Store, Blue Heron Books, Uxbridge Legion,
Uxpool or Presents…. Presents. The Uxbridge Huck Finn Youth Fishing Day is part
of an exciting grassroots program to encourage
young people to get outdoors and enjoy the benefits
of recreational fishing. It is supported by the
Town of Uxbridge, Uxbridge Canadian Tire, Fishing
Forever - Kids, Cops and Canadian Tire Fishing
Days, The Durham Regional Police Association, The
Pickering Rod and Gun Club, The Optimist Club of
Uxbridge, The Royal Canadian Legion, Masonic Lodge
and the Ministry of Natural Resources.,
According to Real Fishing's
Bob Izumi, it makes sense for police officers
to be involved with this
event. "Police officers are role models for
young people,” states Izumi. “To have
them spend a few hours having fun fishing with
youngsters is a perfect way to build positive relationships
that can last a lifetime.” Izumi adds, "The
Uxbridge Huck Finn Youth Fishing Day is where kids will learn these
heroes care about them as individuals."
Izumi's late father Joe introduced many children
to fishing and, as a result, Bob has taken up
the cause of using recreational fishing as a
way to bring families closer together and to
teach important life lessons to children. For more information, contact
